Colonial Buildings of Sfax

Buildings from the Period of the Protectorate

Sfax 1943
Next  End
Our tour this afternoon will take us around the southern section of Sfax's commercial center, between the Avenue Habib Bourguiba and the port. Before we leave the comfortable air conditioning of the Hotel les Oliviers I'd like you to look at a contemporary map of Sfax (on the right) and compare it with the latest map of Sfax before the bombing of World War II destroyed many of the buildings.
In 1943 (and even until the 1980s) the rail line to the south went around the north of Sfax. To develop the new route a whole row of buildings were demolished to make way for the railway. On the map we will use today these are marked with a row of red xs.
